Our Mission
The mission of the Nursery is to end child abuse and neglect and create strong, healthy families.
As a trusted resource for families, the Nursery partners with parents to promote strong, healthy families by offering free, voluntary services for parents who face barriers such as unemployment, homelessness, medical or mental health concerns, poverty, domestic violence, or other difficult situations. We help strengthen families by connecting them to resources, caring for their children during difficult times, and setting goals that promote stability and make the relationship between the parent and child stronger.

Volunteers
Volunteers are an essential part of what makes the Nursery thrive. They are treasured by the children and staff alike, bringing compassion, consistency, and joy into our spaces each day.
Whether preparing a warm meal, caring for children as a childcare volunteer, leading an enrichment activity, or sharing their time and talents in countless other ways, volunteers help create moments of comfort and connection for the children in our care. At the same time, they support our staff and strengthen the overall impact of our programs. Their generosity is woven into the fabric of the Nursery, strengthening our community and advancing our mission every single day.
Pet Therapy
A toddler sat crying on the playground until Murphy gently laid his head on her knee. She held his paw, then smiled and ran off to play. It was a quiet, powerful moment of comfort.
Activity: Murphy and I visit the Nursery so children can spend time with a certified therapy dog. Murphy is a lazy, lovable 3-year-old beagle-setter mix—we volunteer with North Star Therapy Animals.
Why I volunteer: It’s a great fit—Murphy loves kids, and I’ve worked as a preschool teacher with children facing difficult experiences. People dear to me had difficult childhoods and would have benefited from a place like the Crisis Nursery.
Sensory Enrichment
The first time I brought in the sand sensory bins, the kids hadn't seen how when you pack the sand in a container then turn the container upside down the sand comes out in the shape of the container. One boy LOVED it! Every time I showed him and then when he did it himself, he would be so excited! It was such fun!
Since school started, I’ve focused on sensory and fine motor activities that support children’s success in self-care and school. My goal this year has been to help create a safe space where children can be curious and enjoy learning.
