Child Care in a Safe & Nurturing Environment
Greater Minneapolis Crisis Nursery was the first and remains the only residential crisis nursery in Minnesota, and is one of only 20 in the entire country.
We shelter children newborn through age six in a safe, nurturing environment that addresses each child's physical, emotional, cognitive and developmental needs.
Each of our trained Child Care Providers guides three children of similar age in activities designed for their stage of development, and specially-trained child care volunteers provide additional nurturing and attention.
We provided 7,069 days of care to 2,472 children of 1,415 families during FY 2006.
Why is Residential Child Care Effective?
The value of a single facility over the current alternative, placing children temporarily in homes, is manifold:
- Resources: The Nursery has a trained child care staff, a full medical program including on-call pediatricians, as well as a nutrition program that ensures three balanced meals and three snacks per day.
- Social Interaction: Children visiting the Nursery experience age-appropriate play and learning activities, and have the opportunity to interact and play with children their own age.
- Availability: While single-family homes deal with natural issues with schedules, the Nursery is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Our Facilities
Our shelter is a physical representation of the generosity of the communities in which it resides.
While we have done our best to convey the spirit of each facility through our Virtual Tour, we encourage you to arrange a tour so you can experience the following in the same way that our visiting children do:
- Clean and lovingly decorated bedrooms
- Hand-made quilts provided as gifts to the Nursery
- Gym and large play area
- Commercial-quality kitchen and eating area
- Reading area stocked with age-appropriate books
- Artwork from past and current Nursery children
- Children's clothing closet stocked by generous volunteers
- A learning resource room where children can play computer and learning games and listen to music
- Art room where children can explore the world of art through coloring, painting and working on craft projects
- Playground with park-quality play equipment
- Tropical fish aquarium that energizes just about every child that happens upon it
- and much much more...
Special thanks to each of the volunteers, donors, and staff members that have invested of themselves to decorate and furnish the Nursery over the years.
Your generosity and creative spirits have a direct impact on the children who benefit from our services.
